The PUMC Youth Experience:
The church devotes considerable energy toward nurturing the Christian faith of its congregants and producing Christian servants in the community. These efforts regularly go beyond Sundays, the front doors of the church, Pinehurst village limits, Moore County, the state of North Carolina and the United States.
At Pinehurst United Methodist Church, we’re aggressively and enthusiastically directing those efforts toward the up-and-coming future leaders in the church.
Inclusive:
High-Schooler Martin says he has been active in youth group since his family moved to the area his seventh grade year in school.
“It’s really grown,’’ he said. “There are a lot more people. There seems to be a lot more energy. It’s been great meeting people from different places and different backgrounds.”
High-schooler Liz says youth group has been a positive experience for her.
“I’ve met a lot of different, really great people,’’ she said. ”I am more likely to speak up or to start a conversation since I got involved in youth.’’
PUMC Youth group mixes together kids from different schools and communities across Moore County. There are also a lot of diverse family and geographic backgrounds as well as life experiences in the mix.
Youth group members Sophia and Abby have fond memories of interacting with other kids their own age from other churches and other parts of the state during events like Breakaway and Kaleidoscope.
Abby speaks of having her eyes opened quite a bit during the discussion sessions at Breakaway.
“You hear terrible stories about people who have thought about or tried suicide,’’ she said. “You hear about people who have been through abuse. You also hear amazing stories of people forgiving really awful things. It was awesome to see and hear from people who have come back from rough places in their lives.”
Many of the kids will tell you how meaningful their yearly participation in Pilgrimage is. It affords them a great opportunity to further develop their faith while interact with other Christian youth from diverse backgrounds that they likely would never have met outside of church involvement.
Youth group member Kaylee says her family tried a number of area churches before settling on PUMC.
“At those other places, I hardly knew anyone and didn’t feel connected,’’ she said. “I made friends fast here. “
High-schooler Chase says joining youth group at PUMC helped him connect and bond with his three closest friends.
